An outdoorsman in the Lone Star State might’ve saved someone from their “worst nightmare”: a 5-foot Texas rat snake slithering out of a toilet.

Ben Tedrick, a vlogger who runs a YouTube series called “Life on the Ranch,” posted a 6-minute video of the unexpected encounter last Saturday at a previously vacant home in north Brazos County. It begins with the “big ol’ rat snake” peering out of a toilet as Tedrick decides how to safely remove the animal from the rural home that had been vacant for several years before the creepy discovery.

Using a makeshift device made out of a mop and string, Tedrick manages to drag the serpent out of the toilet as shocked witnesses look on.

“Y’all get ready to run,” one man says.

Tedrick, who was afraid he’d kill the animal by decapitating it, then calmly pulled the critter out of the commode by its head and coolly walked it outside.

“He’ll be back in the house in no time,” one man says. “We got to take him way away from here. He’ll find his way back.”

Tedrick, who also works for the Bryan-College Station Eagle, told the newspaper he was surprised how much force it took to remove the snake.

“I was impressed,” Tedrick said. “I had him out about three feet when he coiled up again, and he pulled me forward. I was afraid his head was going to pop off, but he was perfectly OK. You could tell when I released him, it was like nothing [happened].”

Lee Fitzgerald, a professor at Texas A&M and a herpetology expert, said the incident was a “random, uncommon” occurrence.

“It’s rare,” Fitzgerald told the newspaper, adding that the snake likely sought refuge in the warm pipe as colder weather approached. It was probably flushed out of the house’s previously dry septic system once water was restored.

If you ever make the same startling find, stay calm, Fitzgerald said.

“I wouldn’t do anything rash like pour chemicals down the toilet or anything like that,” Fitzgerald told the newspaper. ” … This happens. Snakes in the septic system are uncommon, but they’re not unheard of. It’s alarming, especially to find a big snake like that, but really it’s just one of those random wildlife encounters.”
